Three genetically-modified corn varieties sold by Monsanto showed organ damage in rats, most notably kidney and liver problems. One corn variety had herbicidal properties (“Roundup-ready”), and the other two were bred for insecticidal properties.
Most processed food (including most chain restaurant food) contains corn-derived products like high fructose corn syrup and Xanthan gum. Here’s one more reason to try to minimize the amount of processed foods in your diet.
An easy way to do this in the grocery store is to purchase most of your foods around the outside edge of the store. Processed corn-based foods tend to be located in the center aisles. Ears of sweet corn you’d buy in the produce section are of a different variety and shouldn’t be affected.
